Repose of The Very Reverend Fr Philemon El Baramousy

ree

With deep sorrow and hearts full of faith in the Resurrection, we announce the repose of the Very Reverend Fr Philemon El Baramousy, who departed in the hope of eternal life on Saturday 24 May 2025, after devoting 42 years to monasticism

Fr Philemon was consecrated a monk on 26 May 1983 at the Monastery of the Virgin Mary El Baramous, and in the years that followed, his service took him to the Netherlands. In the year 2000, he was called to serve within our Diocese in New Zealand, where he faithfully ministered to the Coptic Orthodox community for 25 years.

On 5 October 2003, he was elevated to the rank of Hegumen, in recognition of his steadfast dedication and priestly zeal.

Fr Philemon tirelessly served the faithful across cities throughout New Zealand and was especially beloved for his pastoral care to university students, most notably those studying at the University of Otago in Dunedin. His warm presence, spiritual wisdom, and unwavering commitment left an indelible mark on all who encountered him. Fr Philemon also established and nurtured Archangel Michael’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Dunedin, New Zealand.

In December of 2024, Fr Philemon was involved in a serious car accident, that required hospitalisation, rehabilitation and convalescence. Throughout this painful journey Fr Philemon demonstrated his perseverance and faith, that whatever the Lord permits in good and his eagerness to return to service. Most recently, Fr Philemon prayed the Feast of Resurrection Liturgy with the aid of a walker and a walking stick.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday 28 May 2025 at Archangel Michael’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Dunedin, New Zealand — the parish he so faithfully shepherded.

Fr Philemon’s legacy of faith, love, and service will remain etched in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. We are forever grateful for his labour and sacrifice in the vineyard of the Lord.

May the Lord repose his soul in the paradise of joy, grant comfort to his beloved congregation and may his memory be eternal.
