Diocese Representation at the Solemn Pontifical Mass for the Repose of Pope Francis

On Monday 28 April 2025, our Diocese was represented at the Solemn Pontifical Mass for the Repose of Pope Francis, held at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne and officiated by Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli. The Mass was attended by more than 2,500 faithful.

The Diocese was represented by the Very Rev Fr Daniel Ghabrial, Vicar-General of the Diocese; Rev Fr Shenouda Boutros; and Diocese Trustees, Mr Jimmy Morcos and Mr Wes Abdelmalek. Among the distinguished attendees were the Governor of Victoria, The Hon Margaret Gardner AC; Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon Richard Marles MP; Premier of Victoria, The Hon Jacinta Allan MP; along with leaders from numerous faiths and community organisations.

In his homily, Archbishop Comensoli reflected on the life and ministry of Pope Francis, particularly his steadfast devotion to proclaiming the mercy of God. His Grace noted,

"Mercy was perhaps his most frequently spoken word. The mercy of God, in Christ Jesus, was what he proclaimed in as many ways as he could."

We give thanks to God for the opportunity to stand in prayerful solidarity with the Catholic and wider Christian community, to offer our condolences and honour the life, service and legacy of Pope Francis.
