With deep sorrow and a heavy heart, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the heinous and senseless acts of violence that took place in Bondi yesterday, Sunday 14 December 2025. Such acts of terror are an affront to people of all faiths, an assault on human dignity and a wound to the soul of our nation.
On behalf of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne and our entire community, I extend our heartfelt condolences, love, and prayers to our Jewish brothers and sisters, particularly to the Jewish leaders and community who were gathering to celebrate the Festival of Hanukkah. A time meant for light, faith, and remembrance was overshadowed by darkness and fear. We grieve with you, we stand beside you, and we affirm that your pain is our pain.
Our faith teaches us that every human life is sacred, created in the image of God. Violence committed in the name of hatred or extremism can never be justified and stands in direct opposition to the will of God, who calls us to love, peace, and compassion.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” - Matthew 5:9
We stand united with the Australian Government, our national and state leaders, and our law enforcement and security agencies, and we express our full support as they work diligently to bring justice, accountability, and protection to our community. We pray for wisdom, strength, and discernment for all those entrusted with safeguarding our nation.
In this moment of grief, let us not allow fear or hatred to prevail. Instead, may we respond with unity, prayer, and a renewed commitment to stand against all forms of violence and extremism. May God comfort all those who mourn, heal the wounded, protect the innocent, and guide us as a nation to walk together in justice, solidarity, and love.
May Lord have mercy, and may His light overcome all darkness.
In Christ,
+ Bishop Rewis
General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne
