BRIEF HISTORY

Officially opened by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III and the Minister for Primary Industries, Mr. Simon Crean on Friday, 3rd of September 1993.

HOSTEL SERVICES

Situated a two-minute walk away from St. Mina and St. Marina Coptic Orthodox Church, in a quiet court location, the Hostel was designed to provide the residents with pleasant, peaceful surroundings and an atmosphere of independence, privacy, and security. With thirty rooms for permanent residents, the hostel has also made available two rooms for temporary residency for elderly persons whose families may be away for certain periods and need caring for in the meantime. Each room is fully furnishes and has its own bathroom and wardrobe.

 The building itself is divided into three wings including lounge rooms for TV viewing and reading, a special library room for further reading and contemplation, a chapel, a sunroom and outdoor areas. A fully functional industrial kitchen is equipped with the most modern equipment to cater for 60 residents at any one time.

 With highly qualified management and personal who specialize in elderly care and the preparation of special meals and diets, the hostel has special facilities to cater for the handicapped and assistance is available 24 hours s day in case of medical emergencies.

The hostel also provides Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Hairdressing and Massage services.

We have several elderly residents from the broader Australian community living amongst our Coptic elderly in a caring and Christian environment. Assisted form being just a place to live, the Coptic Hostel has provided home where they can live a full and active lifestyle with various spiritual, recreational and educational activities, and many outdoor picnics and outings.

HOSTEL ACTIVITIES

The Hostel has a weekly activities program for its residents, which incorporates:

  • An exercise program daily in the morning followed by morning tea.

  • Craft mornings

  • Cooking programs

  • Chit Chats

  • Movie days

  • Manicures

  • Massage program

  • Games group

  • Carpet Bowls

  • Various competitions

  • Armchair Travel

 Then there is the special events calendar which incorporates:

  • Visits from different church groups

  • The Coptic Mass every 1st & 2nd Thursday of the month

  • Happy Hour

  • Weekly Bus Trips

  • Weekly shopping trips

  • Lunches at restaurants
